Jewellery lights up Old Quarter
Visit Hang Bac Street this week and you'll be immersed in yellow cloth lanterns, colourful flags and white daisy stands.The street, one of the oldest in Ha Noi, has been a centre of the jewellery trade for centuries.This week's decorations highlight the week-long jewellery festival at Kim Ngan Temple, which runs until Sunday.Participants can learn about the process of making traditional silver and gold jewellery from artisans from Dinh Cong Village (Thanh Tri District of Ha Noi), Chau Khe (Hai Duong Province) and Dai Bai Village (Bac Ninh Province). Also on display will be old Vietnamese money and lacquer art from Ha Thai village (Thuong Tin) made with traditional materials such as gold leaf and gold dust.Tomorrow, Hoan Kiem District will hold a ceremony at 6pm to receive a certificate from the Prime Minister recognising Kim Ngan Temple as a national historical site.Built in the 18th century, the temple is dedicated to Bach Nghe, the founder of the jewellery craft. Located at 42 Hang Bac Street, it is famous for its architecture and religious significance.The jewellery festival is sponsored by the Ha Noi Old Quarter Management Board.
